Destiny Morning Owl’s Journey: Education, resilience and giving back

Image

As a recipient of an Indspire scholarship sponsored by Imperial, Destiny Morning Owl, a member of the Blood Tribe,  is finishing her diploma in the Niitsitapii Business Administration Program through Red Crow Community College and Athabasca University. Destiny’s drive to continue her education has been fuelled by personal challenges. She has faced heartbreaking loss, including the passing of her son, Klay Across the Mountain, just two months shy of his fifth birthday. Today, she is using her loss as a beacon for hope as she looks to build a future for herself, her family – and her community

How has being a recipient of an Indspire scholarship impacted you?

The Indspire scholarship has provided me with critical support during a difficult time, helping with travel, gas, and daily expenses. It made a huge difference and allowed me to focus on my studies.

Has returning to school with the help of the scholarship impacted your own community?

My mother was inspired by seeing me go back to school and receive this scholarship  and she is now considering returning to school herself. She sees how far I’ve come and has been inspired by the opportunities I’ve had as a student. This scholarship has made a world of difference, and I hope that by telling my story, I can encourage others to pursue their goals, no matter what obstacles they face.

Has the scholarship changed your outlook on your future?

My children are my motivation to keep going and finish this program. After I finish, I hope to work in economic development for the Blood Tribe. Right now, I’m working a custodial position with the Tribe for experience. I want to make a positive difference in my community. Education is the new buffalo; it opens doors and creates opportunities.
