Expanded rail capacity in support of Strathcona refinery and future renewable diesel facility
Operation of the Southlands Rail Yard has successfully started, marking a major enhancement to rail logistics capabilities at Imperial’s Strathcona refinery. The Southlands Rail Yard is located on former refinery and tank farmlands, which were acquired in the 1980s and is adjacent to Imperial’s Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, where the company is currently constructing Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility.
“We are excited to leverage the Southlands Rail Yard to debottleneck our logistics operations in Western Canada, support local Canadian renewable diesel production and maximize output from our existing refining assets well into the future,” said Scott Maloney, Imperial’s Canada Fuels Manager.
The Southlands Rail Yard project involved the installation of 62,000 feet of track and will increase Strathcona refinery’s rail logistics capacity to around 150 cars per day. It also adds 235 or more rail storage spots adjacent to the refinery. The Southlands Rail Yard will be operated by Cando Rail and Terminals.
