For seniors requiring assisted living, the facility provides an alternative to moving far away from family and friends.
Involving local stakeholders in project planning and execution was key. “At Imperial, we focus on building relationships with Aboriginal communities and community members, supporting our Aboriginal workforce, training our employees about Aboriginal history and culture, and funding much-needed community initiatives such as Kahkiyow Keykanow," says John Whelan, Imperial’s mining production manager for the Kearl oil sands project.
Imperial contributed $1 million over two years to the development of Kahkiyow Keykanow, which is being led by the Mikisew Cree First Nation. The contribution from Imperial, and several other industry sponsors, provided funding for the critical phases of the facility’s construction.
To honour the opening of Kahkiyow Keykanow, Imperial also donated a signed limited edition print from the company’s corporate art collection. The print is called Nan’ghthÌé, and was created by First Nations artist Alex Janvier.
